Marble and Granite in Ontario Home Decor Excellence

Back to Home
Marble and Granite are very popular natural stones in Ontario homes. Interior home design has been incorporating these two natural stones in home decor for many decades. Often the decision of which material to use is a matter of preference, but it could also be dependent on what the stone will be used for.

Marble vs. Granite

Deciding whether you should use marble or granite in your Ontario home is purely a matter of choice. Both materials are readily available and come in a wide variety of colours and designs. The installation options allow you to choose from slabs or tiles and each individual project generally dictates which one is the more practical selection. Natural stone retailers will be more than happy to help you get the right marble or granite that will compliment your decor, and work well with the everyday pressures it will be under. While both stones are stunning and durable, some applications may be more suitable to one over the other. Marble is a much softer stone than granite, and is more susceptible to breakage or cracking and staining. It is, however, a much lighter stone than granite, so it won’t require the same added support that you will need for the installation of granite in your home. Marble is a very porous natural stone, and therefore it is prone to water or other moisture damage. Marble consists primarily of calcite, and therefore it is also quite prone to damage from acidic liquids such as vinegar, fruit juices and cleaning products. The characteristics of each stone should be taken in to consideration when you are deciding where you want your natural stone to be.

Kitchens and Bathrooms

Two of the more common places you will find marble and granite in Ontario homes is in the kitchen or bathroom. Countertops, flooring, backsplashes, tub surrounds, and even wall tiles can be made from marble or granite. These stunning natural stones are a visually appealing choice no matter which room you plan to use them in. While granite is a more durable option for kitchen countertops, marble is a popular option as well. Marble countertops stay cool, and therefore they are commonly used by bakers as they don’t warm the dough while it is being worked. Marble is more porous than granite, and it will need to be sealed regularly to maintain its showroom look and quality. Granite is a great choice for countertops as well. It is so durable that you can cut right on it and it will dull your knives before it will scratch. Marble flooring can be slippery when used in rooms that see a lot of moisture, such as the bathroom. It is wise to use throw rugs in these situations. Another way you can make marble less slippery is to give it a honed finish rather than a polished one. Either finish will still need to be sealed regularly. It is recommended at least yearly and more often if the marble is in a high traffic area. Whether you decide to use marble or granite in your home in Ontario, you will be getting a product that will continue to please for many years to come.
